Aleksandr Dovzhenko
Tagline: The Poet of Ukrainian Cinema, Aleksandr Dovzhenko.
Born in 1894 in Sosnytsia, Ukraine, Aleksandr Dovzhenko became one of the most respected figures in the Soviet film industry, active from 1926 until his death in 1956. Dovzhenko's principal genres encompassed drama, war, and silent films, with his seminal works "Zemlya" (Earth, 1930) and "Arsenal" (1929) etching his name in the annals of global cinema. Unfortunately, his avant-garde style and meticulous depiction of Ukrainian life often put him at odds with the Soviet authorities, thus denying him any major international awards, despite his work's undoubted merit. Yet, despite the lack of recognition, Dovzhenko's unyielding passion for his craft and his profound love for his homeland shines through every frame of his films.
