André de Toth

André de Toth

Distinguished for his gritty action flicks and film noirs, André de Toth was born in 1912 in Máramarossziget, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now in Romania. He was prolific between the 1940s to 1980s, with his most iconic work being the 3D horror classic, "House of Wax" (1953), and the western "Day of the Outlaw" (1959). Although not a recipient of major festival awards, his films have garnered critical acclaim for their atmospheric tension and his unique ability to portray the human struggle for survival against harsh environments. De Toth, an artist with a discerning eye for detail, crafted films that are as much about the human condition as they are about the trials and tribulations of life.
