Andrzej Żuławski

Andrzej Żuławski

Renowned for his avant-garde and often controversial approach to filmmaking, Polish director Andrzej Żuławski was born in 1940 in Lviv, which was then a part of Poland and now belongs to Ukraine. His active years spanned from 1967 to 2016, during which he created a unique filmography largely within the genres of drama, romance, and horror, with his most acclaimed films including "The Third Part of the Night", "Possession", and "On the Silver Globe". Despite the provocative and polarizing nature of his work, Żuławski was awarded the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 2001 Venice Film Festival for his film "Fidelity", and his unmistakable authorial style is characterized by its intense emotional rawness, unconventional narrative structures, and striking visual imagery. As a person, Żuławski was much like his films - uncompromising, passionate, and always pushing the boundaries of the status quo.
