Elmar Klos

A master of the silver screen from the heart of Europe, Elmar Klos was born in 1910 in Brno, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in the Czech Republic. Active as a director from the late 1940s through the 1980s, he was an influential figure in Czech cinema, notably in the genres of drama and war films, with his most famous works being "The Shop on Main Street" and "Obchod na korze." His film "The Shop on Main Street" co-directed with Ján Kadár, received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1965, showcasing Klos's adeptness at detailing the human condition in the face of historical adversity. Elmar Klos, with his perceptive eye and compassionate storytelling, held up a mirror to society and forced it to confront its own nature in the midst of turmoil.
