Emir Kusturica

Emir Kusturica, the maestro of magical realism in film, was born in 1954 in Sarajevo, which was then part of Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina). Active since 1978, he has made a name for himself in the genres of drama, comedy, and fantasy, with his most acclaimed works including "Time of the Gypsies," "Underground," and "Black Cat, White Cat," the latter two of which won him the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Kusturica's unique authorial style is characterized by surrealistic elements, satirical political undertones, and a vibrant portrayal of Romani culture. A true maverick, Kusturica's films are imbued with a zest for life and an untamed spirit, mirroring the man himself.
