A master of Brazilian cinema, Hugo Carvana was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1937 and was active as a director from the late 1960s until his death in 2014. He predominantly worked in the genres of comedy and drama, with his most famous films including "Vai Trabalhar, Vagabundo" (1973) and "Casa da Mãe Joana" (2008), and he was honored with the Festival de Brasília award for Best Film in 1973. Carvana's authorial style was characterized by his keen observations of Brazilian society, often using humor to underscore the deep-seated social and political issues.
