Lewis Gilbert

Lewis Gilbert

An unwavering maestro of British cinema, Lewis Gilbert was born in 1920 in Hackney, London, England, and began his directorial journey from the 1940s, reaching the zenith in the 1960s and 1970s. He dabbled in various genres but predominantly made his name in the world of action, adventure, and comedy, with his most notable contributions being three James Bond films – "You Only Live Twice," "The Spy Who Loved Me," and "Moonraker." Although he never won at major film festivals, Gilbert was honored with a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1997 and a BFI Fellowship in 2001 for his outstanding contribution to British cinema. With a signature flair for thrilling narratives and memorable characters, Gilbert always knew how to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, yet he was a humble and unassuming man who never let fame change his love for the craft.
