Sergey Loznitsa

A master of observational cinema, Ukrainian-born director Sergey Loznitsa was born in 1964 in Baranovichi, in the then-Soviet Union, and has been active in the film industry since 1996. His works, mainly focusing on documentary and drama genres, often mirror the complexities of post-Soviet societies; his most famous films include "My Joy" and "Donbass," the latter of which won him the Un Certain Regard Directing Prize at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Loznitsa's distinctive style is characterized by his profound exploration of human resilience amidst societal turmoil, often employing long takes and non-linear narratives. A quiet observer of the world, Loznitsa captures life's stark realities with an empathetic lens, creating raw and poignant cinematic experiences.
