Sun Namkoong

Sun Namkoong

A pioneering force in South Korean cinema, Sun Namkoong was born in Gyeongseong, Japanese Korea (now Seoul, South Korea) in 1925 and actively directed films from 1956 to 1983. He made his name in the genres of melodrama and action, most notably with his acclaimed films "Mother and a Guest" and "The General's Mustache". Though not a regular on the international festival circuit, he was a celebrated figure in his home country, receiving the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Film in 1968. Sun Namkoong's style reflected the turbulent times in which he lived, often using his films as a mirror to reflect societal issues – a truly fearless storyteller.
