He was active in the film industry from the mid-1980s, predominantly focusing on drama and historical genres, and is best known for his acclaimed films such as "The Last Emperor" and "Raise the Red Lantern." Despite not receiving any major film festival awards, his storytelling is admired for its poetic interpretation of Chinese history and society. On a personal note, Zhong Lei is a director who beautifully captures the nuances of humanity, blending the grandeur of history with the intimate struggles of his characters.
